Getting client content cited in AI answers: what actually helps.

Clients now ask why a competitor shows up in AI answers and they don't. There is no secret switch. Here is what Google and Microsoft say about it, and how to turn that into work you can deliver.

Key takeaways

  • Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Unique, first-hand content beats summaries of what everyone already says.
  • Write answers that stand on their own: clear headings, short direct answers, lists and tables.
  • Structured data must match the text people can see.

What does a page need to appear in AI answers?

According to Google, nothing beyond normal SEO. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and the usual Search Essentials apply. There is no special markup, file or setting that unlocks AI Overviews or AI Mode. Technical access comes first, then content worth citing.

That is from Google's page on AI features and your website. It is worth showing clients directly, because many offers promise a special AI optimization that doesn't exist.

What kind of content gets cited?

Content that adds something the model cannot get elsewhere: first-hand experience, original data, clear opinions from a named expert and specific local or product detail. Google's advice for AI experiences starts with unique, valuable content for people. Pages that only restate common knowledge have little reason to be chosen as a source.

Google's May 2025 post on succeeding in AI experiences lists unique content, a good page experience, crawlable content and structured data that matches the visible page. These are the same principles as its guide to helpful content.

How should conversational answers be written?

Use the question a client's customer would ask as the heading, then answer it in one or two plain sentences before adding detail. Keep each answer self-contained so it still makes sense when quoted alone. Microsoft recommends clear headings, precise language and snippable formats such as lists, short Q&As and tables.

Microsoft's guidance is in optimizing content for AI search answers. In practice:

  • One question per heading, written the way people speak.
  • The answer in the first two sentences, with numbers and names where they exist.
  • Steps as numbered lists, comparisons as tables.
  • The author and date visible, and sources linked.

Is FAQ schema still worth adding?

Not for rich results. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results and removed the documentation in 2026, so FAQ markup no longer earns a special display. Question-and-answer sections are still useful for readers and for AI tools that quote clear answers. Keep structured data that describes the page accurately, such as Organization, LocalBusiness or Product.

See Google's documentation updates. The rule that matters is the one Google repeats in its AI guidance: structured data has to match what users can see.

Reporting on AI visibility

Track a fixed set of client questions every month, record whether the client is cited in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, and save screenshots. Pair it with Search Console data on the same pages. How to package this as a paid line item is covered in how to sell AI search optimization, and what to tell worried clients in AI Overviews and your clients. Frequently asked questions

Is there special markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.

Does llms.txt get a site cited?

Google does not list it as a requirement for its AI features. It does no harm, but content and access matter far more.

Can an agency guarantee AI citations?

No. Like rankings, citations depend on the search engine. An agency can improve the content and track progress honestly.

Should we still write FAQ sections?

Yes, for readers and clear answers, even though Google no longer shows FAQ rich results.

How long until content is cited?

There is no fixed timeline. Pages first need to be indexed and to rank for related searches.
