Key takeaways
- Rewrite descriptions for the products that matter most instead of publishing the manufacturer's copy as is.
- Build titles from what shoppers search: brand, product type, model and the attribute that separates it.
- Use real images with descriptive filenames and alt text, and show genuine reviews.
- Add Product structured data and link to products from categories, not only from search.
Product page SEO is the part of e-commerce SEO that happens one product, or one template, at a time. We have supervised SEO for 18 US online stores with more than 3 million products between them, and the same lessons apply at every size: fix the template first, then invest editorial time where revenue is. It is one of the services we deliver under agency brands through white label SEO. Category pages have their own guide in ecommerce category page SEO.
What is product page SEO?
Product page SEO is the optimization of individual product pages so they rank for specific product searches and convert the visitors who arrive. It covers the title, description, images, reviews, price and availability, structured data, internal links and technical basics such as one indexable URL per product. Most of it is applied through the product template.
The distinction between template work and page work is how agencies keep the project affordable. Template changes (title format, markup, image handling, related-product links) fix every product at once. Page work (a rewritten description, a buying guide section, answers to common questions) costs editorial time, so it goes to the products that sell or could sell.
Should product descriptions be unique, or is manufacturer copy fine?
Manufacturer copy is usually published by every retailer selling the same product, so it gives Google no reason to prefer your client's page. For top products, write original descriptions that answer what buyers ask: fit, compatibility, use cases, what is in the box. For the long tail, improve the template and add unique details where data allows.
Google's helpful content guidance asks whether content provides original information and adds substantial value compared with other pages in search results. That is the test for a product page too. Practical sources of original content that do not require a copywriter for every SKU:
- Questions from customer service and returns, answered on the page.
- Specifications turned into plain sentences: who it is for and what it works with.
- Comparison notes against the next model up or down.
- Store-specific details: warranty handled by the store, shipping times, assembly service.
- Photos and measurements taken by the store, not the supplier.
How should product page titles be written?
Write titles the way shoppers search: brand, product type, model and the one attribute that separates it, such as size, material or capacity. Keep the H1 and title link aligned, avoid internal SKU codes unless buyers search for them, and let the template build titles from clean product data so thousands of pages stay consistent.
| Weak | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SKU 48213-BLK | Brand Model 12 Cordless Drill, 20V, Black | Matches how people search |
| Drill | Brand Model 12 Cordless Drill Kit with 2 Batteries | Separates it from the bare tool |
| Best Drill Ever!! | Brand Model 12 Cordless Drill, 20V | No hype, just the facts buyers compare |
How do you optimize product images for SEO?
Use real, high-quality images in standard HTML image elements, with short descriptive filenames and alt text that describes the product shown. Show several angles and the product in use. Avoid generic filenames and keyword-stuffed alt text. For large catalogs, fix image handling in the template and check that image URLs are crawlable.
Google's image SEO best practices recommend short but descriptive filenames instead of names like image1.jpg, warn against filling alt attributes with keywords, and say standard HTML image elements help crawlers find and process images. Supplier feeds rarely meet that standard, so image renaming is often a template or feed task.
Do reviews help product page SEO?
Genuine reviews add fresh, specific, customer-written content and answer questions the description misses, and ratings can appear in search results through structured data. They must be real. In the US the FTC rule on consumer reviews prohibits fake reviews and certain review suppression, so agencies should never write, buy or filter reviews for clients.
The rule is published as 16 CFR Part 465. A safe practice is a post-purchase review request sent to every buyer, not only happy ones, with negative reviews answered publicly.
What structured data does a product page need?
Product structured data describes the product, its price, availability and reviews in a way Google can read. Google distinguishes product snippets, for pages where people cannot buy directly, from merchant listings, for pages where they can. Add the markup through the template and pair it with a Merchant Center feed where the client sells online.
Google's intro to Product structured data explains both types and notes that providing structured data and a Merchant Center feed maximizes eligibility. Its guide on how to share your product data with Google describes both routes. Products with sizes or colors need ProductGroup markup, covered in product variant structured data.
How should internal links reach product pages?
Every product you want indexed should be reachable through normal links: menu to category, category to subcategory, subcategory to product. Products only reachable through the site search box are often missed. Link best sellers from the home page and content, and use related-product modules built with standard links rather than JavaScript click events.
Google's guide to helping it understand an ecommerce site structure says it is strongly recommended to link to all products you want indexed, and that Googlebot generally does not submit searches in a site's search box. For stores with filters, also check that faceted URLs are not eating the crawl, as described in faceted navigation and crawl budget.

Frequently asked questions
How many product descriptions should we rewrite first?
Start with the products that bring most revenue or impressions, then expand as results show.
Should out-of-stock product pages be removed?
If the product returns, keep the page live with clear availability. If it is gone for good, redirect to the closest alternative or category.
Can AI write product descriptions?
It can draft them, but a person should add real details and check facts before publishing.
Do product pages need a FAQ section?
Only if it answers real buyer questions, such as fit or compatibility.
Is a Merchant Center feed part of SEO?
It helps products appear in more Google surfaces, so it belongs in the same plan as structured data.
