The SEO WordPress checklist: 14 checks for agency client sites.

WordPress makes it easy to launch a site and just as easy to launch one that search engines are told to ignore. These are the checks we run on every client build before and after it goes live.

Key takeaways

  • The most expensive WordPress SEO mistake is a launch with "Discourage search engines" still checked.
  • Choose the permalink structure before publishing, not after the site has rankings.
  • WordPress has generated XML sitemaps at /wp-sitemap.xml since version 5.5; use them or one plugin's, not both.
  • Fewer plugins, a light theme and regular updates do more for speed and security than any setting.

Good SEO WordPress work starts with settings, not plugins. This checklist is the one we use on every site delivered through our white label web development service, and the same checks catch most problems on WordPress sites agencies inherit.

Why does a WordPress site disappear from Google after launch?

Very often because the Search engine visibility box in Settings, Reading was left checked from staging. Since WordPress 5.3 that option adds a noindex, nofollow robots meta tag to the site. WordPress notes that it only asks search engines not to index the site and does not block access, but Google honors noindex when it can crawl the page.

The behavior is documented on the Settings Reading Screen page and in the WordPress 5.3 change note, which explains that the old robots.txt Disallow rule was replaced by the meta tag. That matters because Google's page on noindex says a noindex rule only works if the page is not blocked by robots.txt. If a staging site needs to stay private, protect it with a password instead of relying on the checkbox.

The 14-point WordPress SEO checklist

Settings

  1. Search engine visibility unchecked on the live site, checked or password-protected on staging.
  2. Site title and tagline in Settings, General written for people, since many themes print them in the header and title tag.
  3. Permalinks set to a readable structure before content goes live (see below).
  4. One preferred address: https, with or without www, set in Settings, General and enforced with redirects.
  5. Media attachment pages checked: if the theme or a plugin creates thin pages for every image, redirect or noindex them.

Indexing

  1. XML sitemap working and submitted in Search Console.
  2. robots.txt reviewed, with no leftover Disallow rules from development.
  3. Tag, author and date archives reviewed: keep the ones that help users, noindex or remove empty or duplicate ones.
  4. Canonical tags present and pointing to the https version of each page.

Content and performance

  1. One SEO plugin, configured, with titles and meta descriptions written for the key pages.
  2. Headings: one H1 per page in the theme template, not a logo wrapped in an H1.
  3. Images compressed, sized for their container and with descriptive alt text.
  4. Core Web Vitals checked on the main templates, mobile first.
  5. Updates and backups scheduled for core, theme and plugins.

A structure built on the post name, or a custom one that adds a meaningful folder such as a category, produces readable URLs that rarely need to change. Avoid the Plain option, which uses an ID such as ?p=123. Choose before launch: changing permalinks on a site with rankings means redirecting every old URL to the new one.

WordPress lists the options on the Settings Permalinks Screen: Plain, Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, Post name and Custom structure. Date-based structures make evergreen content look old and tie the URL to a date. The wider rules for slugs and parameters are in our guide to SEO-friendly URLs.

Does WordPress create a sitemap by default?

Yes. Since WordPress 5.5, core generates an XML sitemap index at /wp-sitemap.xml covering public post types, taxonomies, author archives and the home page, and references it in the robots.txt WordPress generates. Core sitemaps are disabled when the site discourages search engines. Many SEO plugins replace them with their own, so check which one is live.

Details, including the default of up to 2,000 URLs per sitemap page, are in the WordPress 5.5 sitemaps announcement. Whichever sitemap the site uses, submit that one in Search Console and make sure it lists only canonical, indexable URLs, as Google's sitemap overview explains.

How to choose an SEO plugin for clients

We do not push one brand. The major SEO plugins all handle titles, meta descriptions, canonicals and sitemaps; what matters for agencies is consistency. Pick one standard plugin for your client base so your team and ours know where every setting lives, never run two SEO plugins at once, and document its settings in the handover. Before adding any plugin, ask whether the theme or core already does the job. When you inherit a site, list every active plugin, who installed it and why. Plugins nobody can explain are the first candidates for removal, after testing on staging, because each one adds code to load, settings to maintain and updates to apply.

How do you keep a WordPress site fast?

Start with hosting and theme: a light theme and good hosting matter more than any optimization plugin. Then remove unused plugins, compress and resize images, use page caching, and delay non-essential third-party scripts such as chat widgets. Measure the main templates against Core Web Vitals before and after each change, using real-user data when the site has enough traffic.

The targets come from Google's Core Web Vitals guidance. Page builders can produce heavy pages, so test each template, not only the home page. We build client sites on WordPress when the client needs to edit content themselves, and as static sites when speed and security come first.

Updates, backups and handover

WordPress's guide to updating WordPress recommends always running the latest version and backing up before an update. Since version 3.7, most sites apply minor and security releases automatically, but major releases, themes and plugins still need someone responsible. Put that in the care plan and the client contract. For rebuilds of existing sites, add the redirect and monitoring steps from the website redesign SEO checklist. Shopify clients have a different list: see the Shopify SEO checklist.

We build and hand over SEO-ready WordPress sites under your brand through white label web development, and keep them growing with our white label SEO services.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress good for SEO?

Yes, when it is configured well. Most problems come from settings, heavy themes and plugin overload, not from WordPress itself.

Do I need an SEO plugin on WordPress?

Not strictly, since core outputs sitemaps and basic tags, but a plugin makes titles, descriptions and canonicals easier to manage.

How do I check if a site is set to discourage search engines?

Look in Settings, Reading, or view the page source for a robots meta tag with noindex.

Can I change permalinks after launch?

Yes, but every old URL needs a permanent redirect to its new address, and rankings may fluctuate while Google recrawls.

How many plugins are too many?

There is no fixed number. Remove any plugin you cannot justify and test speed after adding a new one.
